FEBRUARY 2020

Dear Members,

Earlier this month, the Boston Globe ran an editorial highlighting some of the many things that Massachusetts gets right—education, health care, scientific research. Many of the Roundtable’s companies and organizations play important roles in fueling the innovation that makes Massachusetts a global leader.

I want to thank Roundtable members, as well as call out the support and collaboration from our partners in state government. If you missed the editorial, you can read it online.

We appreciate your continued engagement to make this a great place to do business.

Roundtable Chairman Bob Rivers Hosts Discussion with New Board Members at Eastern Bank

New Roundtable member executives from Takeda, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Berkshire Bank, Hollister Staffing, PNC Bank, Loomis Sayles, People’s United Bank, MFS Investment Management, EMD Serono, and Evee Security Group joined MBR leaders for a special on-boarding luncheon hosted by MBR Chair Bob Rivers in Boston. The meeting offered a great opportunity for new Roundtable Board members from diverse industries to get acquainted with one another, as well as with leaders on the MBR Executive Committee.

MBR Executive Director JD Chesloff and the staff highlighted the Roundtable’s mission, value proposition for membership, governance structure, member communications, and public policy priorities. New members shared information about their companies, their backgrounds, as well as their interests in engaging with the Roundtable. Special thanks to those who shared their insights about the Roundtable and connected with our newest members.

MBR Submits Testimony on Health Care Legislation
The Roundtable submitted testimony this month to the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing on H..4134, An Act to Improve Health Care by Investing in VALUE. MBR’s comments were grounded in the member-driven policy principles adopted by the Board for this legislative session and reflected direct input from numerous members.

MBR continues to promote efforts to ensure patients in every region of the Commonwealth have access to high quality health care in the right place, at the right time and for the right price, which remains as a bedrock principle guiding the Roundtable’s advocacy on state health care policy. Here is an exerpt from the testimony:

“While health care in Massachusetts—near universal access to it and the high quality of it—remains a key competitive advantage and major economic engine in the state, the rising costs of care continue to impact employers and patients. We respectfully urge you to bear this in mind as you reconcile the goals outlined in H.4134 with the myriad health care bills under consideration by the State Legislature during the remainder of this session.”

Roundtable Continues Partnership with Attorney General Healey and Boston Mayor Walsh for Employers Against Sex Trafficking
More than a dozen Roundtable members joined with Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh to support their work to combat human trafficking in the Bay State. Roundtable business leaders provided support for the Employers Against Sex Trafficking (EAST) initiative to promote best practices and zero tolerance policies in the workplace.

Attorney General Healey recently wrote an op-ed in the Boston Business Journal shining the spotlight on the fact that human trafficking is one of the fastest growing criminal industries in the nation. She recognized the support from the Roundtable, Greater Boston Chamber and Alliance for Business Leadership, while also calling for “more businesses to join our collaborative efforts to end this crime and protect victims and survivors. Adopt a zero-tolerance policy. Implement workplace trainings. Make clear value statements to your employees and colleagues.”

MBR Teams Up with NACDNE on Transportation Infrastructure
With transportation infrastructure as a top priority issues for businesses, the Roundtable teamed up with the National Association of Corporate Directors in New England for an event this month about recruitment and retention of talent in region mired in gridlock. A panel conversation in Boston led by Tracey Zhen, President of Zipcar, included Roundtable members Donna Cupelo, Region President, Verizon and Jim Tierney, Managing Director, JLL New England, as well as Bob Coughlin, President & CEO, MassBIO.

The wide-ranging discussion highlighted innovative ways businesses are using to support and retain talented workers across a variety of industry sectors. The discussion also addressed transportation solutions in the context of combating climate change, relieving congestion, implementing new technologies, and improving economic competitiveness with other states. Thanks to all who participated on the panel and to the business leaders and corporate directors who joined in the discussion.
