Dear Members,

MBR Board Meeting
Tuesday, December 3, 2019
8:30–10:00 a.m.
Skadden Arps
500 Boylston Street, Boston
Meeting Open to Roundtable Members Only

As the Legislature breaks for the remainder of 2019, we are continuing to collaborate with state leaders to advance key Roundtable policy priorities in the areas of transportation, education, health care, taxation and energy. There is important work ahead on these and other policy issues impacting the competitiveness of the Commonwealth.

I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the continued support, engagement, creativity and hard work of Roundtable members across the state to move closer to our shared goal of making Massachusetts a better place to live and grow a business.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Roundtable Supports Launch of Massachusetts Caregiver Coalition, Unveils Employer Toolkit & Survey Data on Family Caregiving in the Workplace
Dozens of leaders from business, health care, education and state government participated in the launch of the new Massachusetts Caregiver Coalition during an event hosted by Babson in Boston during National Caregivers Month. A discussion led by Roundtable member Mark Butler, President, Cigna New England highlighted family caregiving stories and resources to support talented workers across different industries. The event also included the release of a new Employer Toolkit and survey data to help address the needs of unpaid family caregivers across Massachusetts

"The launch of this Coalition raises awareness about the importance of family caregivers to their families and the business community across the Commonwealth,” said Massachusetts Secretary of Health and Human Services Marylou Sudders, co-chair of the Governor’s Council to Address Aging in Massachusetts. "The toolkit is one of the many practical efforts supported by the Governor's Council to Address Aging to assist employers who want to support caregivers juggling their professional and caregiving responsibilities."

Companies are engaging and supporting talented workers with family caregiving responsibilities as part of a larger strategy to reduce turnover and absenteeism as well as to increase presenteeism and employee satisfaction. With more than 840,000 residents of the Commonwealth providing care to an adult over the age of 18 during the past year, the emotional, physical, and financial impacts associated with caregiving offer opportunities for public and private partners to develop innovative solutions supporting caregivers. A study found that informal caregiving cost Massachusetts employers $982 Million in 2017.

MBR Partners with MBAE and Business Community on Support for Education Funding Legislation
The Roundtable submitted testimony and worked with its partners at the Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education and others in the business community to advance the Student Opportunity Act, which passed the House and the Senate. Along with its partners, the Roundtable supported additional funding for school districts with a commitment to standards, assessment, and accountability to ensure student progress is measured reliably. These proven measures were included in the final bill and will ensure the money is used to close persistent racial and socio-economic achievement gaps throughout or Commonwealth.

The Roundtable thanks the leadership in both the House and Senate for their commitment to advancing educational opportunities for the children of the Commonwealth through this bill.

Roundtable Collaborates on Transportation Solutions
Roundtable members have continually identified fixing the state’s transportation infrastructure and making the system more equitable and reliable for commuters as a critical component for continued economic and environmental sustainabilit y. To best address this, the Roundtable joined with a variety of stakeholders in coalitions including The Transportation Table, The Massachusetts Business Coalition on Transportation, and the Senate Transportation Working Group to identify a series of transportation funding recommendations. As a statewide organization, the Roundtable worked to ensure that the coalitions’ recommendations not only addressed issues of congestion but also regional equity concerns that affect the Commonwealth as a whole. The Roundtable will continue to advocate for our member-driven transportation policy solutions through the remainder of the 2019-20 legislative session.
