NOVEMBER 2018

Executive Director's MessageDear Members,

It has been a busy fall for the Roundtable and its members across the state. MBR’s Task Forces are developing a set of principles and priorities that will guide us in 2019 and next legislative session. We helped to convene the Jobs and Workforce Summit in Devens and the STEM Summit, with more than 1,000 STEM professionals, in Worcester. And, the diligent efforts of Roundtable member companies contributed to major victories on statewide ballot initiatives.

Thank you to the Task Force Chairs and members, and to all of you who participated in our events, provided your thoughts as we build an advocacy agenda, and engaged with each other and the Roundtable to meet our mission of making Massachusetts a highly desirable place to do business in a global economy. I am truly grateful for your participation.

MBR Sponsored STEM Summit Draws Educators, Policy Makers to Worcester
More than 1,000 teachers, business leaders, workforce professionals and policy makers participated in the 15th Annual STEM Summit in Worcester this year to celebrate, highlight and promote the importance of science, technology, engineering and math for the state’s long-term economic vitality.

Roundtable member Verizon was the premier sponsor at this year’s Summit that featured a partial airing of Without a Net: The Digital Divide in America. More than a dozen Roundtable member companies stepped up as sponsors, served on panel discussions and led exhibitions. Roundtable member Dell Technologies and MATHCOUNTS teamed up for a unique quiz show, “Are You Smarter than a Mathlete?” Congratulations to Erin Cronin, Revere High School, who was named STEM Teacher of the Year promoted by the Hall at Patriot Place and Raytheon.

This year’s theme was “Pipelines to Prosperity.” The STEM movement, both nationally and in Massachusetts, often uses “pipeline” as a metaphor to describe a lifelong continuum of developmental milestones. Along the pipeline, efforts focus on exposing diverse students, from pre-kindergarten and into higher education, to innovative approaches designed to nurture curiosity, motivation and achievement in STEM areas. This progression then paves the way to STEM pathways towards entry and advancement in the STEM workforce.

The Summit is hosted by the Massachusetts Business Roundtable, the Massachusetts STEM Advisory Council, and the UMass Donahue Institute and supported by generous contributions from a broad array of public and private organizations including businesses, educational institutions, government agencies, and non-profit entities.

Big Wins at the Ballot! Roundtable Promotes & Supports Successful Campaigns Yes on 3, No on 1 Earlier this month, the Massachusetts Business Roundtable, which represents employers from diverse industry sectors employing more than 250,000 people across the state, supported “Yes on 3” and “No on 1” votes on the ballot. Both campaigns were successful! Special thanks to all Roundtable member companies that stepped up to support transgender rights and oppose strict nurse staffing ratios. Roundtable members provided support through volunteer hours, direct outreach to employees and financial contributions that helped the campaigns carry important messages to voters. Congratulations to everyone who engaged on these winning campaigns. The Roundtable and its members continue to believe that sound public policy is best developed not through a statewide popular vote, but through the deliberative democratic process.

Mass Taxpayers Foundation Produces Report, Hosts Summit on Opioid Addiction with Governor Baker, Attorney General Healey, Congressman Kennedy
Before a capacity crowd at Bank of America, the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation unveiled a powerful report entitled, “The Economic Impact of the Opioid Epidemic: An Issue of Substance.” Governor Charlie Baker noted important role employers can play to support people suffering from substance misuse, as well as assisting employees with family members struggling with addiction. Employers, health care professionals, addiction specialists, non-profit organizations and others joined state and federal leaders to highlight best practices and successful programs that are helping to address this nationwide epidemic. Congratulations to our friends and colleagues at Mass Taxpayers Foundation for this important contribution to the discourse. Please read the report and share it with your human resources professionals to inform their work.
