Executive Director's Message

Dear Members,

We continue to hear from our members across industry sectors about the importance of maintaining our key competitive advantages in the Commonwealth. While there are many positive signs for a continued strong economy, there are also a number of issues that we will be working to address during 2018 to strengthen the state’s position in a highly competitive global economy. Addressing talent gaps, high costs of electricity and health care, a slate of new mandates on employers proposed through ballot initiatives and concerns about transportation infrastructure are a few of the priorities the Roundtable is focusing on in this new year.

We look forward to working collaboratively with our members, partners and policy makers on Beacon Hill to ensure that businesses continue to create new opportunities and jobs in every region of the Commonwealth. Thank you for your continued support!

Roundtable Teams with MassTech Collaborative on Cyber Talent Initiative
The Mass Tech Collaborative and the Roundtable are teaming up on a project that will engage the Commonwealth’s employers in an assessment of talent and workforce challenges related to cybersecurity. Numerous Roundtable members note the importance of cyber security to their businesses and have agreed to have leaders from their companies serve on a new Cybersecurity Talent Advisory Group.

In September 2017, Governor Charlie Baker announced the formation of the Mass Cyber Center at MassTech. The new Advisory Group will inform the Commonwealth on hiring challenges related to cybersecurity, and engage industry leaders on formulating the state’s short- and long-term cyber talent and workforce strategy development. Among the topics the Advisory Group may consider are the following:

  • Identifying the types of positions and skills organizations need to address the cybersecurity challenge;
  • Advancing effective strategic partnerships across academia, industry, and government;
  • Increasing the state’s cybersecurity profile and ability to attract and retain talent; and,
  • Determining the best ways to leverage and strengthen university R&D assets across the Commonwealth.

The first meeting of the Mass. Cybersecurity Talent Advisory Group will be held on Wednesday, February 7th at MassTech in Boston. To learn more, please contact Chris Kealey or at the Roundtable office, 617-728-0881.

Roundtable Member Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare Takes Steps to Curb Opioid Crisis
Roundtable member Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare leads the way by not charging co-pays for life-saving drug Naloxone (used to treat opioid overdose) for more than three years. In a recent release, Harvard Pilgrim highlighted its steps to address opioid addiction, a major challenge in Massachusetts and across the country.

“We made a decision three years ago not to charge co-pays for naloxone because we believe there should be no barriers between this drug and the individuals who need it,” said Harvard Pilgrim’s Chief Medical Officer Michael Sherman.

Harvard Pilgrim President and CEO Eric H. Schultz, a member of the Roundtable’s Executive Committee added, “We made our decision some time ago and hope that other insurers will see the value of this approach, which is intended to support the work of law enforcement and others in the community to make naloxone more widely available.” READ more

Washington Outlook for 2018
Happy New Year, and welcome to the second session of the 115th Congress. With the start of a new year, Congress returns to Washington for the second session of the 115th Congress, while President Trump readies for his first State of the Union on January 30, 2018. The legislative agenda for the year is already stacking up, with a number of issues facing hard deadlines for action, not to mention the looming 2018 midterm election cycle which could impact the ability of the Republican majority to enact its policy agenda as they now have a smaller majority (51-49) in the Senate after the arrival of newly elected Democratic Senator Doug Jones (D-AL). While not exhaustive, this Outlook for 2018 provides a high-level report on a number of policy initiatives that we expect will dominate the congressional and executive branch focus and calendar for the coming months.
