    SUMMER 2017
around the table
Executive Director's Message

Dear Members,

I want to thank our members for taking the time to meet with us this summer. These individual member meetings began under the leadership of former MBR Chair Donna Cupelo, and they have become an invaluable tool for us to learn about the challenges and goals of our members across the state. Chris and I look forward to reporting on the common themes and policy ideas that are emerging from our conversations with members during the MBR Board meeting in September.

As a statewide policy organization, we are pleased to be convening the September Board meeting on Tuesday, September 19th at 8:30 a.m., in New Bedford, where we will be joined by Mayor Jon Mitchell and new members of the Roundtable from the region. Additional details will be sent out via email to all members. We look forward to seeing you there.

Have a great rest of the summer!

Best,
JD

MBR Convenes Ad Hoc Committee on Innovative Business Solutions Led by Mark Butler, President of Cigna Health, New England
Roundtable members participated in MBR’s new Ad Hoc Committee on Innovative Business Solutions led by Mark Butler, President of Cigna Health, New England. Members shared strategies and solutions to overcome common challenges facing employers across a variety of industry sectors. The group discussed ways to support employees to maximize innovation, strengthen internal & external brand, manage technology disruption, meet changing customer demands and better understand today's competition.

One member noted a question from an employee who asked, “When are we going to stop changing so quickly?” The answer was clear: “We are not.” Change is constant, but it has a major impact on talented workers across industries. With the competition for top talent at a premium, members highlighted best practices for managing change, supporting employees and enabling them to pursue their passions. Several themes emerged from the initial meeting about specific ways employers are doing the following:

  • Encouraging and supporting talent to maximize innovation
  • Establishing authentic branding messages to improve company culture
  • Adapting to rapid change from external forces

Any members interested in participating in future meetings of this new Ad Hoc Committee are encouraged to contact Chris Kealey. Future meetings will explore issues and strategies for creating work-life balance; innovations in the workplace; and, personalizing the customer experience.

Roundtable Members Team Up with State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg on Board Diversity
State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg unveiled a new report this summer from her “Bringing Diversity on Board” initiative, an effort to help corporate leaders advance diversity in the boardroom. This spring, MBR teamed up with Treasurer Goldberg to help organize three roundtables in Boston that brought together leaders from industries such as technology, finance, health care and pharmaceuticals. The report provides a detailed overview of the successful strategies and action items shared at the roundtables.

“Board directors are charged with planning the strategic direction of the companies they oversee in a dynamic and rapidly-evolving environment. Recruiting, investing in, and retaining a diverse board is not just a social goal; it is a business imperative,” said Treasurer Goldberg in a release. “Working together, we are making important progress to strengthen our businesses and our economy. Now is the time to seize the momentum. We hope corporate leaders and other stakeholders find this report helpful and practical.”

State Treasurer Goldberg, who provided the keynote remarks at the MBR Annual Meeting in June, thanked the many Roundtable members and expert representatives from member companies who participated in the working sessions. The Roundtable and its members have a long-standing, active commitment to increasing diversity in all its forms.

Roundtable Partners with Public Officials, Business Leaders to Raise Awareness about Human Trafficking
Attorney General Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh called a meeting to educate business leaders on the issue of human trafficking, its relevance to the workplace and to identify ways for employers to address it. The stories and examples of abuse are both stunning and heartbreaking. Following the discussion, MBR Executive Director JD Chesloff and Jesse Mermell from the Alliance for Business Leadership collaborated on an op-ed that ran in the Boston Business Journal to help the Attorney General and Mayor reach out to the broader business community about this effort. The op-ed includes themes that are consistent with the Roundtable’s ongoing work to promote equity, diversity, fairness and safety in the workplace.
