Executive Director's Message

Dear Members,

Representative Ann-Margaret Ferrante of Gloucester, Chair of the House Committee on Community Development and Small Business, Co-Chair of the Legislature’s Tech Caucus, and friend of the Roundtable hosted a tour for business leaders of the O’Maley Innovation Middle School in Gloucester. The tour included representatives from Roundtable member companies including Verizon, iRobot, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, Vertex and EMC. The school is an educational gem, offering its students hands-on opportunities to learn from faculty and school leaders who excite a passion to learn. It is a unique place, and one that deserves consideration as a model for middle school education across the Commonwealth. Thanks to Chairwoman Ferrante for the tour and for her leadership on Beacon Hill on STEM, technology, and issues of importance to business.

Roundtable Convenes Conversation with Attorney General Maura Healey at Cabot, Cabot & Forbes in Boston

During a Roundtable members-only gathering of CEOs and senior business leaders hosted by MBR Executive Committee member Jay Doherty, Attorney General Maura Healey emphasized the importance of collaboration with the business community as a key partner on issues including health care, energy, economic development and the opioid crisis. She said the AG’s office is committed to resolving issues through a lens of fairness, predictability, clarity, transparency and enhanced communications with businesses.

Roundtable members had the opportunity to engage with Attorney General Healey in a small setting that featured a robust conversation on topics such as the implementation of paid sick leave, energy and health care costs, as well as student debt. Members voiced support for the goal of the earned sick time law approved by the voters and set to take effect on July 1st but highlighted several specific concerns and examples of challenges in the implementation.

After hearing input from business leaders and other key stakeholders, Attorney General Healey announced a new “safe harbor” provision that extends the implementation of the law until December 31, 2015 for employers already offering paid sick leave benefits. MBR appreciates this compromise and thanks Attorney General Healey for working collaboratively with the business community on this issue.

Roundtable Joins Business Community Coalition Calling for World-Class Transportation System

More than two dozen groups representing the business community joined forces calling for swift action on Beacon Hill to develop a world-class transit system for the Commonwealth. The groups outlined a framework that supports the major recommendations for governance and management reforms offered by a special advisory panel to the Governor. The business community held two joint press conferences attended by Lt. Governor Karyn Polito to clearly articulate the call for major transformation in the governance and management of the MBTA. The Roundtable is leading the social media charge issuing live tweets from the legislative hearing at the State House on the Administration’s proposal, as well as during the press conferences. Numerous business groups and public leaders joined the social media push echoing support for meaningful reforms with an emphasis on establishing a fiscal control board to oversee the MBTA.

The Roundtable is pleased to welcome its newest member, Robert E. Johnson, Ph.D., President of Becker College, which has campuses in Worcester and Leicester. Under President Johnson’s leadership, Becker College is a fast-growing leader in preparing students for success in the state’s innovation economy sectors, particularly in video game design and development, through its Mass. Since he took office as the tenth president of Becker College in July 2010, this charismatic leader has charged the institution with a new, world ready entrepreneurial mission; led the creation of groundbreaking academic programs; realized significant capital projects; strengthened the institution’s financial foundation; and, challenged students and faculty to compete in an increasingly global society.
